Queensland children can now receive a free, needle-free flu vaccine through the 2026 Queensland Nasal Spray Flu Immunisation Program. The program is available to all children aged 2 to 5 years, as well as children aged 6 to 17 years who have difficulty with needles. The vaccine used is FluMist, a nasal spray influenza vaccine approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
FluMist is delivered as a gentle spray into both nostrils, making the experience much easier for children who are anxious about injections. With millions of doses safely administered in the United Kingdom and the United States over the past decade, it has a well-established safety record and provides strong protection against influenza, including severe disease. Side effects are usually mild and short-lived, most commonly a runny or blocked nose, headache, or tiredness. By making flu vaccination more accessible and comfortable for children, the program helps protect not just the children themselves, but also their families and the broader community.
