Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory illness that can affect people of all ages, but older Australians are at particular risk of serious illness. The great news is that as of 15 May 2026, a free RSV vaccine is now available on the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for all Australians aged 75 and over, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 and over who have a Medicare card. Only one dose is needed, and if you have already received an RSV vaccine previously, you do not need to be vaccinated again.
RSV protection is also available for other members of the family. If you are pregnant, a free RSV vaccine is recommended from 28 weeks of pregnancy to help protect your newborn against severe RSV disease from birth.
For babies and young children who may not be covered by the pregnancy vaccine, a free RSV protective treatment is available through the Queensland Paediatric RSV Prevention Program. All of these products have been assessed as safe and effective by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
